There was no one to hear his cries. Few witnesses to his silent despair. Yet Erich Jackson lives to share his story of personal struggle to survive within America’s Foster Care System, A bureaucracy that paid little attention to signs that Erich was experiencing unimaginable abuses that nearly stole his life. A child of the 60’s, Erich was born to a young single mother who also was in foster care. Erich was raised in approximately 10 different foster homes before he was 16, where he was sexually and physically abused and treated like an animal, he was classified by four different psychologist as being severely mentally retarded with their recommendations were for him to be committed to an institution for the rest of his life. He over came the life that dealt him of feeling alone, and without family, feeling like life had betrayed him, being confused about his sexuality, experiencing being homeless, and finally trying to take his life through drug addiction because of not understanding his purpose in this life. Despite these challenges, Erich did survive. He battled to live despite the odds that were stacked up against him. Through these experiences, Erich has developed an inner spiritual strength which he knows now but that he had to go through these experiences to be where he is today. I want to use the same type of support system that I was blessed in having through out my life, and allow others who need it more than ever now through this organization, Orphaned Children Now Adults. He states," I hope that this organization will help lead to restoring a lot of lives for those, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. " |
